Initiatives and Updates
Mentoring
The official kick off to the 2010-2011 Mentoring Program began the 1st week of October. Students entered the library with great excitement, eager to see their mentors! This year every 2nd grade Eastside Charter School student is fortunate to have a mentor. So far, the mentors have been helping their students read from their phonics readers and complete reading comprehension assignments. In addition, select 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students participate in the Mentoring Program. Some of these students have been working with the same mentor for over 3 years. All of the students that participate in the mentoring program have been thrilled to receive the one-on-one attention and help with their academic assignments. Both the students and their mentors are excited for another successful school year.
PRIDE
CIS continued to promote school wide P.R.I.D.E. (Productive, Integrity, Respect, Determination, and Efficient) events during the month of October. Students were able to earn PRIDE tickets for displaying positive behaviors throughout the school. Those students that earned 35 PRIDE tickets were able to attend the Rita’s Water Ice party on October 1st. On October 29th, 175 students turned in 50 tickets and attended an Ice Cream Social. In addition to attending the PRIDE events, students may also turn in their tickets for the bi-weekly raffles. During October students won prizes such as footballs, basketballs, games and art supplies. CIS will continue to organize and promote the school wide positive incentive events every month.
College Trip
Communities In Schools Site Director, Becky Stahl, organized a visit and tour to Delaware State University and University of Delaware for all 7th and 8th grade students. On the field trip the students met with an admissions counselor who provided them with insight on Middle-toHigh School transition and information on how to prepare themselves for college. At the visits students were taken on a tour around each campus and were able to experience college life.
